The compound annual growth rate of IC shipments from 2020 to 2025 is expected to be 11%

The compound annual growth rate of IC shipments from 2020 to 2025 is expected to be 11%, which is 5 percentage points higher than the compound annual growth rate of 2015-2020. When ignoring 5-year CAGR periods with unusually high or low endpoints, IC Insights sees a long-term outlook for IC unit shipments of 7%-8% CAGR, slightly below its 30% annual growth rate of 9%.
This shows how rare a decline in IC shipments is. 2019 is the fifth decline in IC shipments in the history of the IC industry (the previous four years were 1985, 2001, 2009 and 2012), and there has never been two consecutive years of decline in IC shipments.
The image shows quarterly IC unit shipments compared to the projected trend line from 2005 to 2021. In 2008, with the full onset of the global recession in the second half of the year, the underlying demand for ICs fell sharply.
